Guilford Turns its Town Green into 1860’s America

History came alive on the gorgeous spring day of May 31, 2014, when the Guilford Green was abuzz with stories, music, dance, theatre, horse-drawn carriages and more, channeling 1860’s America. “Guilford & The Civil War: A Day of Tribute” took place in honor of Guilford’s 375th Anniversary, commemorating the valiant soldiers who fought and gave their lives in America’s deadliest war, and recognizing as well the families and entire Guilford community who supported them on the homefront. Residents and neighbors near and far, of every age, gathered to learn about, participate in, and reflect on what Civil War Life in Guilford was like. They did so with the help of 30+ re-enactors from Company F, Fourteenth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, Guilford Preservation Alliance’s historical bus tours, Dudley Farm’s open-air market, playwright Toby Armour’s series of original 10-minute plays, dance performances and music designed by New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s William Boughton, and many more who earnestly devoted their time, skill, and talent to the festivities.
